Nice play on words, huh? For those who aren’t “in the know”, Balayage (French for sweeping; scanning) is a the BIG SISTER to Ombre. “Ombre is more a structured technique that creates an effect of light to dark/ dark to light. Where balayage is the “way” to apply color”, says Glam Hair Studio stylist Amber Anne. “Balayage is used instead using foils. We use this sweeping motion when our guests want more of a natural highlight or lowlight. We still section and use patterns, but what makes this technique different is how soft the highlights appear. It’s a simple concept and makes sense; you’re coloring the hair where it lives”, Amber adds. For Katie’s hair (pictured) we wanted a violet-red base with flashes of copper-red. By using Balayage, we were able to achieve a natural look. The Balayage technique takes time, a trained eye and a steady brush to achieve the look. If you are bored with foiling try balayage and get swept away. Next up we’ll be talking “Blurred Lines”.
