5 Things you don’t know about your Professional Hairstylist
Lately there has been some confusion about hairstylists. Especially in the Instagram and YouTube community. There seems to be a lot of unlicensed stylists on Instagram and Youtube giving hair advice. While some of it’s pretty good, keep in mind all you see is the edits. Sure, some people say “It can’t be that hard to be a hairstylist?” Well… let’s shed some light on that subject with 5 things you don’t know about your hairstylist.
1.) In Pennsylvania it takes 1250 hours (10 months) to become a cosmetologist. We are licensed to do Hair, Skin and Nails. Our professional license is equivalent to a Bachelors Degree. The first 250 hours are dedicated to Sanitation, Disinfection, Steriliztion, skin, nail and hair disorders, and diseases. From dermatology to lice we cover it all. We know the bones and muscles in your face.
We even know what the words “onychophagy” and “thioglycolate” means! While in school we actually worked on clients. But our education doesn’t stop there. Our industry has continuing education classes that we attend monthly or quarterly. Our industry is always changing and trends come and go. So, while social media stars make it look easy in 2 minutes, its harder than you think.
2.) Chemistry is our friend. We use and understand all the chemicals we use in our color formula. Although that social media diy influencer makes it look easy, there is so much thought and science when mixing hair color. Every head of hair we touch has a different texture, thickness or color. From the cuticle, cortex and medulla we need to know how chemistry affects the hair. From ammonia to monoethanolamine to peroxide to Para-phenylenediamine(ppd) be assured that we know what is going on your hair.
3.) Our backs are killing us. We stand all day for six to eight hours. We don’t have lunch breaks. Although we do have 5 minutes sometimes to grab a few bites to eat. Shampooing is hard work. Our hands and feet ache at the end of the day. But its all worth it, because we love what we do.
4.) We don’t just lift up hair and cut it. Haircutting or “Design” is half geometry half art. We understand head shape, lines and angles. We use language like texture, graduation, elevation and degrees. Vidal Sassoon was the innovator of the modern hairdresser. Before 1964 hair was set with rollers, finger waves, or pin curls. Vidal introduced haircuts like The Pixie, The Shag, The Mooch which required no effort to style.
5.) We are the world’s greatest “keepers of secrets”. What is said at Glam, Stays at Glam.
We are so excited to offer Davines color and hair products. Davines is a family owned company from Parma, Italy. What we love about this company:

HIGH-PERFORMING AND SPECIFIC FORMULAS

The products in each family contain an active ingredient from the Slow Food Foundation centre for Biodiversity. The Centres are maintained by producers who work to preserve and maintain traditional products that are at risk of extinction, with the aim of protecting unique plant species, local traditions and craftsmanship.
